shopping with farts

Hi. Remember me? Well, somebody we love dearly has the big "C", so I thought I'd gear up the 'ole Brain Child in hopes that our simple family musings help in some small way.

Rather than catching you up for the last year, I'm going to pretend I never stopped and just dive back in to our every day life.

Upon returning home from school today, Mac picked up the mail. Just like she's seen mom and dad do 100s of times, she sifted through the parcels. She quickly found a magazine of interest, "American Girl" (containing dolls and their accessories). I was preoccupied but overheard her oohing and ahhing. Next thing I know, she makes a mad dash somewhere and returns to the table. A short minute passes and I hear squeals of delight as she sprints over to me. An explanation ensues:

"Daddy, daddy! I got the mail and saw this magazine and I had to read it immediately. Look, look! There's pajamas for Claire, or they'd look really cute on Marsha." Those are 2 of her dolls. "And daddy, look!" Her eyes are as big as silver dollars at this point. "It costs $24! I have exactly $24! Can I get it?!?!" I should clarify that we give Mac money for random things she does to help and she has $24 in her purse. I say check with mom (which means yes). She's stoked and heads back to the table, where I hear more chatter... "Oooh, but that one is so cayute. Oh, and just look at those little slippers, precious."

The cute factor was quite high as far as 7-yr-olds go. I'm losing a lot in translation here, but I found it hilarious as the little girl (by that I mean giant) tried her best at a teenager impression.

So, what's new with Grace you say? Excellent question. I gave her a bath tonight. After the bath, she puts on her underwear and she was pretty stoked to find Dora covering her bum. "Daddy, Dora panties!" "Yup." She then turns around and pushes out her butt in my face so I can get a better look at Dora. I look at her face to catch a curious smirk. Then, flatulence. The kind that makes a dad proud. She immediately starts howling with laughter, "Daddy, I farted in your face!" I slowly turn to Mac and realize that she wasn't giving me a better look of Dora, but rather prepping... she did it on purpose! Mac realizes the same and also starts howling with laughter. Grace can't stop saying, "I farted in your face!" Now Luke sees the girls laughing and doesn't really know why but joins in, cuz a good laugh is always a blast. I'm trying to find it in myself to put serious on and scold Grace... but I lose it. Life is too short and farts are always funny. Always.

A day in the life of Grace

"Daddy, one time I had a poop thiiis big," exclaims Grace holding her arms straight from her sides. She continues, "It was so big that it made me tip over. I think I'm having a poop that big again." A few moments later... "Nope, this one was small. I think it was only inches."

Yes, she was sitting on the toilet during this conversation. Yes, I somehow managed to keep it together and not spoil the moment. Seriously, Sarah needs to clean up her language... clearly she's talking about the size of her bowls too much around Grace.

I've been trying to remember conversations like this to put up here so you know what it's like to live with Grace right now. The things that come out of her mouth...

In other news, Mac only has 8 days of school left (same as Sarah). She's feeling a little bittersweet about it. She can't wait to "play" all day, but she will miss her friends a lot. A question recently posed to Mac from aunt Mandy, "MacKenzie, are you the smartest kid in kindergarten?" Her response, "No, but I'm the biggest." True statement... by several inches. Poor Amazonian kid. Oh, the pic above is from a play we took the kids to in Colo Springs. It was AWESOME. Small little production of kids doing circus type stuff. Really talented and well done. Kids loved it.

Luke is really starting to figure out sounds and is making good progress. He's starting to spit out words more frequently now. We also think he's in a growth spurt right now. The dude seems taller by the day. He gave us a little scare this weekend with a fairly serious case of croup. He woke up Sat night with a seal bark of a cough and barely able to suck in a breath. He couldn't even cry. He got better the longer he was awake, but we thought it best to take him in. So, Sarah took him to the ER where they gave him steroids to open his wind pipe and some cool water treatment with mist. He's been dandy since and surprisingly strong. Kids are great that way... freak you out one second and back to normal the next.

peace.

you're not dreaming... there's a new post

I'm sorry to say I would've posted an update sooner, but Somali pirates abducted my blogger password. Thankfully they released it after I agreed to spread the word on the destructive nature of illegal fishing.

So, the fam. Luke is killing it! Our boy's growin. He recently had another checkup with the therapists and they decided he no longer needs physical therapy. He's now just working with an occupational therapist who's going to help him get his words out. He's spitting out quite a few and is doing great, but isn't quite where he should be for his age. We moved him to a "big boy bed" about 3 weeks ago and although we were sure he'd be beating down the door every day and falling out of bed, the transition has been seamless. He's still his laid back, chilled self, but with just a touch of 2-yr-old now. Not being able to communicate definitely has its moments. However, 2 seconds after spazzing out, he flips the cute switch back on and all is well. Don't remember if I said this before, but the kid loves to dance. For you worried alpha males, don't worry he loves throwing stuff too... but when the sisters get the Hairspray soundtrack cranking, he can't help himself and he's a dancing fool. I must say, I can relate.

Grace... the stuff that comes out of that girl's mouth right now is priceless. I wish I could record every second of it. For example, just last night Mac is starting the bath and Grace and I are watching a litle playoff bball downstairs. Mac starts yelling something at her and Grace is just glued to the TV. All either of us hear is at the end, "Grace, what do you think?" Grace's response, "That's interesting." She didn't break the TV watching concentration. Classic! She's also getting to the point where doing the wrong thing isn't as fun as it used to be. I'm sure it's a fleeting moment, but we're enjoying it. Don't get me wrong, she still has plenty of spunk and reminds us of the fact often.

Mac is the big sister and the mother hen. It's a huge help with Luke when we're not in the room and we can (somewhat) trust her to watch him. She's doing awesome in school. Both Sarah and I had the chance to be parent volunteers and it was great to see her in her element. She really is a great student and picks it all up so quick. I think she has to be reading close to a 2nd grade level. Ya, I'm the dad... of course I think she's a genius. But, I gotta say, have her read to you, it's pretty ridiculous. She's writin purty swell too. Did you know she's tall? The good news there is that she loves bball and told me she wants to go to the gym more and play... uh, heck ja, I'm there! Yesterday, she was bouncing a ball outside with this 3rd grader, and the 3rd grader thought she was in 2nd grade! She really does love playing with Grace every chance she gets. Hopefully that lasts for another 12 years and we're set!

Didn't know you'd be reading a novel did you? Sarah is helping to coach another crew of Girls Gone Tri this year and they are bigger (in numbers) and better than ever. In case you were wondering whose fault these freak snow storms were, it was all Sarah. She keeps trying to plan "Spring cleaning" at Niwot High with the environmental club. Guess when the last 2 times she's tried to plan that out?

And me? Well, you don't really care and this has been long enough.

peace.

little man walking

Updated 10/28: Sorry, I started this back on 10/14, but didn't have the video uploaded yet... so now you finally get it.

Hi... So, getting back to just after Moab. I leave for the weekend and Luke was walking, but when it came down to it, he still preferred crawling. After hanging out with his upright cuz for the weekend, I come back and he's a walking machine! No kidding, the switch finally flipped all the way and he's drunk-walking everywhere and loving life. Check it:

Another final milestone has passed in our household. We are now a family of walkers. So, a reader, who will remain anonymous, has requested some Moab details. Team, "That's What She Said" (the origination of the name in case you care) had high hopes for 4 laps/person. So, they called this year, "The year of the wind". Here's an example of what we were dealing with as the race started (no the tent is not supposed to look like that). It was crazy. The wind didn't stop until ~11pm and then it got quite cold. Those factors, in combination with the fact that I wasn't in the shape I'd hoped to be caused severe cramping and stomach issues on my second lap. I could barely walk and didn't think I could continue the race. Prior to that lap, everybody was turning in ~1.5 hr laps, which was better than our goal. The first night lap for everybody proved to be tough other than Matt, who ponied up and did 2 in a row at the coldest time of night!!! What a freak! So, I cramped, and Jeff broke his shoe on his night lap, which made the sand real fun. I did manage to do another lap in the morning and so did Jeff. But, because I couldn't get up and ride (that's what she said), Brent missed another lap. Sorry. So, final tally... Matt 4 heroic laps. Jeff 3 laps and breaking a shoe. Jesse 3 laps with wussy legs and stomach. Brent 2 laps cuz he got screwed by wussy Jesse.

Wow, that was long... sorry. To close, here's a clip of Mac doing what she does:

peace.

mac attack

Note... Updated 10/25. This post was originally written on 10/5, just never got it up cuz I wanted to add pics, but most of corresponding pics were not taken on our camera and now our camera is MIA.

Yo. So, we've been pretty busy lately. We went back to NE to hang with the Goracke's and all the Wort sisters at the lake last weekend. This weekend we made the annual pumpkin patch trip where Grace finally got to ride a real horse for the first time ever. She loved it. Today we went up to Estes again to see us some elk and take in the changing trees. The weather is definitely changing to fall finally and it was gorgeous.

So, Mac has decided to try to spell everything she can lately. Example, give her some dinner. Response, "Thank Y-O-U, D-A-D." Or some Mac humor for you (same response to me...), "Thank Y-O-U, M-O-M. J-K!" Both girls are now using JK all the time, which mom got them hooked on to use for all their punch lines. FYI, JK == Just Kidding.

Two weeks ago, an outdoor education company came to Mac's school where they had a climbing wall and kayaking. Obviously the climbing wall was a huge hit with the kids. When it was Mac's class' turn to go, the instructor asked her teacher who the most respectful student was (as they would get to go first). And the teacher stated the obvious, Mac. :)

Last week, Mac had her first parent-teacher conferences. A monumental occasion in our house to be sure. The teacher reinforced the fact that Mac was well-behaved and respectful. Also, I've told you before that Mac loves to learn and is constantly reading, creating stories and wanting to work in her school workbooks mom buys for her. Well, I guess that's transferred to the classroom where she's doing very well. She was selected as 1 of 2 students from her class to meet with the "Gifted and Talented" teacher once a week where they will be writing letters to their very own pen pal at their sister school in Mexico (?? I think Mexico). To say the least, we're very proud! :)

Quick note on the Luke front. He finally started to stand up on his own a couple of days ago. Now, when he feels like walking if he falls down, he just stands up and keeps going. But, he only feels like walking about a quarter of the time now... but he's getting closer. Also, Mac and Grace are constantly convinced that he is saying real words. Just the other day, Mac was convince bubba said "Marta". She was so excited about it, and I'm sure that's exactly what he said :)

carving a bday

Hi. So, I always have a pretty good excuse (imo) as to why I haven't written in a while. However, I feel like this one is actually valid as my hard drive crashed, which I realize doesn't really affect an online blog... but it ate up time and who wants a blog without pics anyway.

Since so much has happened since the last post, I'm actually going to skip to now as I started 2 other posts for the other events. This weekend was Noah's big bday celebration so we were down in the Springs. Always good hangin with the in-laws and letting the ladies win in games.

So, the partay was at a place called Itz which is like Chuck E Cheese on 'roids. Needless to say, the kids loved it. We came back today and went to a pumpkin carving party which was a good time. After my "Rockies" jack-o-latern last year in honor of heading to the world series, I felt I had to try to follow... Hence the Obama pumpkin. There I said it. I'm for Obama. And now that's out there... even if you're for McCain, surely you can get a little chuckle at this: http://www.palinaspresident.us Click on everywhere there's a hand.
